Optometry Student Continuing Education Program
Young optometrists are challenged to succeed from the moment they graduate optometry school. SECO International offers a one-day education program, Saturday, March 1, 2008, to help students prepare to face important decisions when they enter the optometric profession. The optometry student education program is produced by SECO International, LLC, and supported in part by The Vision Care Institute.
The first session, entitled Optometry's Marathon, will feature Dr. Glen Steele, Gary Odom (executive director of the Tennessee Optometric Association), and Dr. Kevin Alexander (current president of the AOA).
The session will highlight the strategies that have been used to change the profession into what it is today, along with the efforts required to facilitate these changes. This session will outline the many legislative initiatives necessary to achieve these successes, along with practical tips on how to become involved with your legislator(s).
The second session, entitled Passing the Torch – Getting Involved, will feature Dr. Doug Clark (current president of SECO International), Dr. Jim Sandefur (executive director of the Optometric Association of Louisiana), and Dr. Susanne Cunningham (SECO 2007 Young OD of the South). This course will discuss why students need to learn and embrace the value of striving for leadership opportunities in organized optometry. This session will also highlight ways students may take leadership roles within local, state, and national associations upon graduation from optometry school.
Dr. Walt West, an internationally renowned speaker and practice management consultant, will lead the third session. Dr. West's course, Twelve Strategies that Will Define Your Success, is a valuable, entertaining, not to miss presentation, focused on the often unrecognized challenges that graduates face as they transition to business owner, partner, associate or employee.
Students: Earn a $100 Stipend
SECO International and the Vision Care Institute appreciate the time and effort required to attend optometry school. So, they want to reward students who seek additional education opportunities. Students who complete all three of SECO's student education program courses will receive a $100 cash stipend in appreciation for their participation.
Please note terms and conditions of cash stipend: Student stipends are issued to optometry students who attend all three student education program educational courses during SECO 2008. Student stipends may be redeemed at the conclusion of the SECO 2008 student education program from 5:00-5:30PM in the Registration Hall. Students must present a valid student ID and three stipend vouchers distributed at the conclusion of each of the three student education program educational courses to redeem cash stipend. This program is limited to one stipend per person, and stipends may only be collected by the individual claiming the stipend.
Celebrating Students: Friday, February 29, 2008
SECO International will host a party for optometry students on Friday, February 29 from 9 to 11 p.m. It's a unique opportunity for optometry students to mingle and network, while enjoying food and entertainment. And, it's a chance for practicing optometrists to meet these new prospective optometrists.
Since 1993, SECO International has considered it a privilege to recognize outstanding optometry students from its three affiliated colleges of optometry, including: Nova Southeastern University College of Optometry, the Southern College of Optometry, and the University of Alabama Birmingham School of Optometry. SECO presents outstanding students from these three schools with the Southern Council of Optometrists Clinical Excellence Award, an annual prize of $1,000. SECO International has announced its 2007 award winners: Tara Boyle (NSU), Cayce Davis (SCO), and Haley Parker (UAB).
SECO is committed to providing the best education possible to both the practicing and emerging optometrist. In addition to the student education program, SECO International also provides a $5,000 educational grant to each of the three affiliated colleges of optometry.
